“Children are likely to live up to what you believe of them.” – Lady Bird Johnson
When my 5-year old son Miller grabbed an affirmation card of mine that read, “I am resilient,” and asked me what it meant, I explained it to him in kid-friendly language.
When he asked to pull his own card and chose “I am empowered,” again, I explained it to him.
But I knew that he was onto something more.
For the past few months, I’ve had a morning routine that encompasses daily affirmations, gratitude journaling and visualization. And knowing what I know about modelling behaviour for our littles [as a Kindergarten teacher], it should have come as no surprise to me that my boys wanted to join in and do the same.
After quickly creating some affirmations for them with a black Sharpie and some old cue cards, we worked on our morning routine together. From there, I invested a little more time into creating and designing a more refined version of them.
With 50 variations, written in kid-friendly language, these digital cards are intended to be used as conversation starters, as a strategy in our toolkits and as a way to build up the little ones in our lives.
Studies tell us that when we use positive affirmations consistently, they help to build positive self belief, self worth, and feelings of competence. Ask your child for evidence that the affirmation is true. If the affirmation is “I am brave,” use this to talk about a time when they were scared but they did something anyway. Give the brain evidence that the affirmation is true.
With everything going on in the Universe right now, our children need to curl up in our laps and talk it out.
These "I am Affirmation Cards" cover 50 key personality traits that foster social-emotional competence in young children. Using beautifully illustrated positive affirmation cards written in kid-friendly language with discussion question prompts, children explore the traits in a fun, educational manner with parents, siblings, teachers, and peers.
To get the most out of your affirmation deck, print it at home or have it printed professionally through a stationary shop. Place your cards where you will see them often, such as on your bedside table or on your homeschool desk (for our virtual learners!) where you'll see them. Choose one card each morning to focus on and to set the tone for the day or use them as reflection cards before bedtime.
